Extra Presents
Oct. 17th, 2012 04:19 pmI've already gotten some pleasing specific-to-my-birthday gifts, but I'm counting my blessings more than usual because the last few days have also coincidentally brought some extra presents I'm inordinately happy with.
Yesterday: The mail brought me my contributor's copy of Space and Time, which features my science fiction poem "Flowers in Scorched Soil". Woot! This is definitely one of my weirdest, if not my weirdest, poem so far. Bibliography win.
Today: One of the librarians, who actually hadn't remembered that today is my birthday, brought in a cake. Food win.
Today: My Mom was at a dental appointment when the receptionist realized that Mom is my mother and wanted to verify my mailing address, because I have a $45 credit coming to me. The check, as they say, will be in the mail. Money win. This gets bonus points because I actually hadn't been to that dentist in several years.
Saturday: I had what turned out to be my most thorough and best eye exam in years. I'm terribly near-sighted, but the doctor went into detail about how healthy my eyes are, and that my prescription was almost completely unchanged in 20 years. Bonus points for him adding that with the type of near-sightedness I have, if my vision starts going in my elder years, it's a statistical near-certainty that I'll lose distance vision rather than close-up. Especially good news to someone who spends so much time writing and reading--I have the feeling I could tolerate a great deal just as long as I'm able to keep doing those two activities. Ocular win.
Another nice birthday present from today concerns Laurie: There's a job in town that she's said time and time again she would jump to apply for if it ever came up--it did, she jumped, and she has an interview Monday. *Deep breath on her behalf*
