Today's Gorgeous Solar Phenomenon
Nov. 29th, 2011 08:44 pmAll too briefly, the clouds around the sun today at a bit before 2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time turned into rainbows. I don't mean there were rainbows in the sky--I mean the clouds themselves were painted in rainbow colors as if by an enormous invisible brush. There was no standard ROYGBIV here: the colors--a few together here, a lone one there--danced slowly as the clouds drifted, curving with the clouds' contours, mixing, separating, glowing. I could've watched it for an hour, but I was walking to work--and as it was, the whole thing faded back to white even before I got there.
I have no idea what caused this (ice crystals, maybe?), but on some level I don't really care. I'm just glad that I was lucky enough to see it.
