This was very nearly a griping and kvetching post, but after reading through my Friends List here and seeing what bad things others are going through, I felt a little guilty about the thought of detailing some rough stuff happening here lately. But I am going to mention a little bit about it to explain why I may not be getting a lot of writing done in the near future.

Some of you may remember that in August of 2010, Laurie and I found out that the college I work for and rent a house from decided they were going to try to sell all of their rental properties. What followed was months' worth of what I called distraction: Trying to pack a household, scrambling to find homes for all the cats we were fostering, and either find another place to rent that would allow pets or to get a loan for our own place so pets would no longer be an issue. And not being able to get a loan. Or find another rental. After seven or eight months we learned that we would be able to stay after all, though the college would continue looking into sale possibilities in the future.

There was one immediate impact on my writing: I'd been researching Arizona but didn't want to jump into such a big project while all the rest of that was going on. Arizona would end up waiting another thirteen months to get started; in the meantime I started my Roman Empire fantasy novel, To Murder an Empire, which as I said at the time I "wrote while distracted". Still, the book wound up being 130,000 words long, nearly all of which was written during the upheaval, though it took me a couple or three months longer than it might have otherwise.

Deja vu: I won't know all the details at least until tomorrow, but Laurie and I were notified Friday that the college is once again pursuing the option to sell the rental houses. We'll have thirty days to decide whether or not we want to buy the house, which will be going on the market as-is.

At least this time we're better prepared in that it didn't come as a shock from a clear blue sky. But there's going to be a lot of work involved regardless of the outcome, work I'll be doing when I would've otherwise been writing. Alternating between seeking a new place to live versus the possibility of buying this one. Packing up stuff just in case we have to move--I've already filled a corner of the spare bedroom two layers deep with boxes full of books, though most are still on their shelves. (Four thousand books fill a lot of boxes.)

And trying to find new homes for some of the cats, including Vegas the Writing Assistant and his sister Velvet the Simple Cat. To add insult to Vegas' injury, I've also had to dismantle his box pile, his perch beside my Writing Computer that he's "guarded" over the last three years while I write. Real estate folks are going to be walking through the house to determine its value in a little over a week, and by happenstance the boxes were strategically located to make the Writing Room almost complete unnavigable.

Anyway, that's my tale of woe for the nonce. Most of the time when you don't see me post a Progress Report here it's because I just didn't remember or get around to it; now it's likely because there will be nothing to report. Originally I figured I'd come down to the last few weeks' worth of writing on Copper Heart while I also plugged away at an outline for the Secret Project, but now I'll have to see how those shake out time-wise.
