madwriterFun research fact discovered just yesterday: In Hopi, three of the four definitions of the word Tota'tsi are dictator, a bossy person, and a baby. After their first two centuries' worth of experiences with Catholic missionaries and priests, the Hopis also added the meaning "Catholic priest". I've run across quite a lot of Hopi words with multiple meanings, but this one takes the kwangwanova.

New Words: 950 on Chapter 3 ("Spirit, Faith, and Reason") of Arizona. Franciscan missionaries arrive at the pueblos for the first permanent religious settlements there.

Reason For Stopping: Getting ready for work.
Book Year: 1629.
Mammalian Assistance: None.
Stimulants: A bit of Dr. Pepper.
Exercise: Walked Tucker the Big Dog around the neighborhood.
Today's Opening Passage: If an entire continent could be said to be obsessed with one theme for a whole century, then what consumed Europe in the seventeenth century was the division between Church and State—or where the boundary blurred.
Darling Du Jour: But what the secular government ignored, the church viewed as an opportunity—particularly the Franciscans. Like Fray Augusto de Alvarez ninety years before, these latest gray robes expected to be punished for every soul they failed to lead to God’s throne. They saw Coronado’s expedition not as a failure but opening their eyes to people they imagined were enduring constant spiritual darkness. Coronado’s friars failed to make Christianity take hold there; later missionaries fared no better even when they survived. Fired by anti-Protestant missionary zeal, though, these Franciscans assured themselves that they would succeed. So while Spain’s other missionaries en masse, the Jesuits, were still concentrated in Mexico, the Franciscans pressed north to the pueblos.
