Once upon a time, at least seven or eight years ago, there was a fellow named Hugh D. Layden living in the house where I now live. Occasionally I still get junk mail addressed to him--no big deal. What is a big deal is that I occasionally also get bills for him, like tax bills, and now and again what appear to be demands for payment for parking tickets.
I'm not sure exactly when he bought the car, so I can't tell you for certain whether he just never did an address change, or he bought it using his old address. What I can tell you for certain is that this county has been sending him tax notices for ages, and he's got parking tickets from all over Washington D.C. and Montgomery County, Maryland (the latter being where he lived, the last I heard). I've long since started wondering if he intentionally never changed his address so he could get out of paying taxes and tickets.
I've tried telling these senders that he no longer lives here, to no avail. I tried returning the mail with notes like "No Longer At This Address" written across the envelope, to no avail. I found a Hugh D. Layden in Montgomery County and forwarded the mail to him, but he sent them right back claiming he was another Hugh D. Layden. I tried contacting his daughter on Facebook and never heard back from her. With the latest piece of mail--from the "Department of Motor Vehicles Adjudication Services" for what I assume is yet another unpaid ticket--I thought I'd renew the hunt again to give him the opportunity to, I don't know, make good on all these tickets and not get arrested. But once again, no luck.
So, any advice? I'm still just sending back the mail with the "Not Here Anymore" note, but I'm open to suggestions (or assurances that I've done everything I can). I'm getting to the point where I'm considering just shredding all of these bills whenever they come and letting Mr. Hugh D. Layden take his chances. I have not yet, at least, sent back any of the mail with the note "YOU'LL NEVER CATCH ME, COPPERS!!!"
