The first part of the dance was for the women, who circled a fire singing songs that gave thanks for the victory, cursed the enemies who brought war down on the Hohokam, and then mourned the dead, all while drums beat the rhythm of their laments. Those who had lost family were then given the fresh scalps to ceremonially wipe away their tears.

Then it was the warriors’ turn—here, of course, Tohbi was the only woman dancing. Their drumming and dancing called out to the spirits that they had now had power over the dead warriors whose scalps the Hohokam had claimed. When the dance was finished they impaled the scalps one by one on a pole brought by the Scalp Keeper, then let Judumi mount the pole in the earth by the ball court.
