The traders had gathered in a circle of sleep beneath deer pelts and around a small fire, all except Wikvaya, who was a few paces away and quietly singing his prayer over and over again while staring up at the moon. When the young man stopped for a sigh, Ooljee picked up the song in the same pitch. He gazed at her with a wonder she found frightening, but she held her ground even knowing he would likely ask her for help again. “Where are you from?” she asked him.
(I didn't write the above prayer, by the way; it comes from a Hopi artist, who in turn learned it from his grandmother.)
